"Then I went out for two hours late in the afternoon and put in a hundred tulips. In itself that would not be a big job, but everywhere I have to clear space for them.... I really get to weeding only in the spring and autumn, so I am working through a jungle now. Doing it I feel strenuously happy and at peace. At the end of the afternoon on a gray day, the light is sad and one feels the chill, but the bitter smell of earth is a tonic."
        — May Sarton (1912-1995, New England poet, author, and feminist)

Book of the Month: From the Dean of American Landscape History

Rudy Favretti has helped guide the restoration of scores of important landscapes around the country, and his Landscapes and Gardens for Historic Buildings has been a bible to thousands of museum sites and home owners since it was first published in 1978. This month marks the release of his latest book, Jacob Weidenmann: Pioneer Landscape Architect, and it's a remarkable achievement. In the nineteenth century, Weidenmann was almost as highly regarded as Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York's Central Park, but since that time his name and work have been largely lost in the shadows of history. Favretti's illuminating biography is based on decades of research and is illustrated with over 50 period plans, drawings, and photographs, most of which have never been published before. Be sure to check out the back cover, too, where you'll see a blurb praising the book by our own Scott Kunst!

Heirloom Tulip Wallpaper by Bradbury and Bradbury

This Arts-and-Crafts wallpaper frieze in ochre, olive, and sienna would be gorgeous even if it didn't feature tulips. See for yourself at the website of California's famed Bradbury and Bradbury Art Wallpapers: http://www.bradbury.com/index.html. While you're there, you may find the perfect wallpaper for your Victorian parlor or 1950s rumpus room, too!

Combo of the Month: 'Andries Orange' and Sizzling Partners

Our good customer Becca Brown of Worcester, Massachusetts, writes:
"Just a note to let you know that my dahlia 'Andries Orange' is thrilling me and everyone else who beholds him right now in my garden. I have him planted in front of a purple-leafed cotinus with perilla at his feet, some hot colored zinnias in front, and aster 'Alma Potschke' (hot cherry pink) about to burst forth beside him. Also in the mix nearby: geranium ‘Rozanne’ and hot spots everywhere of neon-orange emilia (tassel flower). Life doesn’t get much better than this! Thank you, thank you!"
